Joe Galaxy is an outrageous, satirical sci-fi comic series. It was created by the legendary Italian underground cartoonist Massimo Mattioli. The character’s misadventures span a wild, 14-year universe run, which was recently compiled and translated into English for the first time by Fantagraphics. Who is Joe Galaxy?

An Unhinged Antihero: Joe is a swashbuckling, wisecracking space adventurer who looks like a hybrid eagle-duck.

A Walking Contradiction: He is brutally fierce and arrogant, yet frequently acts like an absolute idiot.

A Lawless Rogue: He spends his time smuggling contraband alien adult material, cheating at interstellar poker, and fighting monsters. The Universe & Setting

The Big Clam: Many of Joe’s adventures take place on this artificial planet. It is located in the Camel Nebula’s Citroengeel binary solar system.

The Environment: The planet features a massive shell containing fake ultralogen suns, moons, and artificial ecosystems filled with tourists and eccentrics.

Defied Physics: The story is set in a dimension where the laws of physics do not apply and no narrative rules hold back the chaos. Tone and Artistic Style

Underground Roots: The comic heavily borrows from 20th-century counterculture sensibilities reminiscent of Robert Crumb and Moebius.

Pop-Culture Parody: It blends a vibrant pop aesthetic with standard sci-fi tropes, breaking the fourth wall constantly.

Adult Content: It features oodles of over-the-top violence and adult themes, stripped of any “funny animal” cuteness.
